A Once‑in‑a‑Lifetime Night at Nashville Barrel Company with Fred Minnick
By Jeff - In His Voice
JOINT INTRODUCTION
Some nights sneak up on you. Others announce themselves the moment the tickets hit your inbox. This one? It practically kicked the door down. When my wife spotted that Fred Minnick — yes, that Fred Minnick — would be at Nashville Barrel Company (NBC) for a book signing and barrel selection, it was an instant yes. No hesitation. No debate. Just pure, unfiltered excitement.
For anyone who loves bourbon or rye, Fred isn’t just a name; he’s a compass. A storyteller. A palate you trust even when your own second‑guesses itself. The idea of watching him work through a barrel pick in person felt like stepping behind the curtain of Oz.
Since we were driving up from North Alabama for the event, we built a whole day around it — tastings, tours, Tennessee Whiskey Trail stamps, and the anticipation of watching a legend do what he does best. What we didn’t know was that the night would flip itself upside down in the best possible way, and that a simple scheduling mix‑up would turn into one of the most memorable whiskey experiences of our lives.

HOW THE NIGHT UNFOLDED
We arrived at NBC’s headquarters ready for our first event and immediately took in the scene — a stylish lounge, multiple bars, a shop full of spirits and swag, and even “Adult Slushies” made with their WooShine spirit (which Fred later jokingly roasted).

Our Whiskey/Wine and Chocolate Pairing Event
Our private Whiskey/Wine and Chocolate Pairing, hosted by Ivan, felt more like a VIP warm‑up than a scheduled tasting. Nancy Fae had her wine (we didn’t even know NBC sold wine), and I had bourbons and ryes thieved straight from the barrels. Together we worked through dark, milk, and almond chocolates that hit every note just right. A first‑class start to the day.

Our Premium Tasting Event Upgrade
When we stepped back into the main bar area for our next event — the premium tasting — something felt off. Tables were being rearranged for the evening’s big event, staff weren’t sure who was leading our session, and our “premium experience” seemed to have evaporated into the rickhouse air.
And then, out of the restroom (of all places), walked Fred Minnick — ascot, dinner jacket, and the kind of presence that makes you forget you’re standing outside a restroom. We grabbed a picture, because how could we not?

Moments later, NBC’s CEO, Mike Hinds, came out and explained the mix‑up: our premium tasting should’ve been canceled due to the Minnick event. But instead of offering a refund, he offered something else entirely.
“You guys are getting a premium upgrade.”

Next thing we knew, we were seated with Fred, Mike, and James Davenport — NBC’s Chief Blender, Mix Master, and Single Barrel Samurai — tasting through eight rye barrels to help select two for NBC. Adam Partin, General Manager of NBC’s Louisville Rickhouse location, also joined us.
Nancy Fae and I exchanged a quiet, wide‑eyed look — the kind that says is this really happening?
I expected to be a fly on the wall, soaking in the pros’ notes like a student in a masterclass. But after the first four samples, Mike turned to me and asked:
“If you were going to kick one out, which one would it be?”
Shock. Panic. Existential crisis.
But I answered: “Number three.”
And Fred — the man whose palate has judged more whiskey than I’ve probably walked past in my lifetime — said:
“I would agree with that.”
I could’ve floated out of that room.
My initial ranking had #4 as my top pick, but I second‑guessed myself and swapped it with #1. When Fred revealed his favorite, he chose #4. I was this close. Should’ve trusted my gut. Still, standing shoulder‑to‑shoulder with giants and being asked for my opinion? That’s a memory that sticks.

Nancy Fae picked Fred’s pick.
We signed the barrel beside Fred and even purchased the first bottle from it — a top‑shelf trophy if there ever was one.
The second round of four samples humbled me a bit, but as Fred and Mike reminded us: taste is personal, and it changes day to day. No wrong answers. Just honest ones.
Nancy Fae picked Fred’s pick again.
The Book Signing and Group Bourbon Barrel Selection
Then came the event we originally bought tickets for — the Bottom Shelf book signing and bourbon barrel selection. A small, intimate group of 15–20 enthusiasts gathered as Fred guided us through blind bourbon samples. This time, I nailed his pick dead‑on — and so did Nancy Fae. We bought the first bottle from this barrel too.
Fred read from his book, we shared stories with fellow bourbon lovers, bought bottles from the selected barrels, and soaked in every moment. My only regret? Not getting Fred to sign the bottles we purchased.
But the memories — those are signed in ink.

JOINT CLOSING — His, Hers & The Good Life
His:
Some nights remind you why you fell in love with whiskey in the first place — not just the flavor, but the fellowship. Sitting with Fred, Mike, James, and Adam wasn’t just an upgrade; it was a masterclass wrapped in humility and good company. I’ll be chasing this feeling for a long time.
Hers:
There’s magic in watching someone you love light up in a room full of people who share the same passion. The night was unforgettable, not because it went as planned, but because it didn’t — and somehow became even better.
The Good Life:
The Good Life isn’t about perfect itineraries. It’s about the unexpected moments, the shared glasses, the stories you bring home, and the memories that age better than any barrel. Nights like this remind us why we chase experiences — not just bottles.
