ONCE UPON A TIME IN KENTUCKY. A BASIL HAYDEN HISTORY
Crafted in 1992 by Booker Noe as part of the Small Batch collection, Basil Hayden introduced a more subtle side of bourbon compared to its counterparts.
This style of bourbon was inspired by 1792 whiskey pioneer Meredith Basil Hayden, Sr., a rye farmer from Maryland who moved to Kentucky and began distilling. He chose to distill his bourbon with a higher percentage of rye, and Booker set out to create a similar high-rye mash bill that would offer the same refined, approachable taste profile.
Today, this bourbon stands as a tribute to Meredith Basil Hayden, Sr.’s high-rye mash bill ingenuity, as well as to Booker Noe, a true innovator who sought to welcome new drinkers into whiskey.

How We Feel About the Spirit
Basil Hayden Bourbon: The Belted Beauty That Finally Won Us Over
Written by Nancy Fae for His, Hers & the Good Life
Introduction
Some bottles charm you long before you ever taste what’s inside. Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey was one of those flirtatious little numbers for me - its iconic belt cinched around the waist like a well-dressed guest at a rooftop soirée. When we began curating the spirit ambassadors for our Sipping Room, I kept eyeing it, wondering if this lighter, 80-proof bourbon deserved a place among our more assertive bottles.
Jeff, however, was unmoved. He’d once had a cocktail featuring Basil Hayden that didn’t suit him, and he never forgot it. I’d mention the bottle; he’d shrug. I’d point out the belt; he’d raise an eyebrow. I’d say “It’s everywhere in cocktails!” and he’d say “It’s 80 proof.”
But the universe has a sense of humor — and impeccable timing.
During our July 2026 Mixology Class at The Ledges, Joey (bartender, teacher, and part-time bourbon whisperer) featured Basil Hayden in the Paper Plane cocktail we mixed that night. The drink was bright, balanced, and downright delightful. Jeff agreed. And once Jeff agrees, the path to the Total Wine checkout counter becomes remarkably smooth.
So now, Basil Hayden stands proudly in the Sipping Room — belt, charm, and all — ready to shine in whiskey cocktails and remind us that sometimes the universe knows exactly what it’s doing.

His Take (Jeff)
I’ll admit it: Basil Hayden wasn’t on my radar. The lower proof made me think it wouldn’t stand up in a cocktail, and my one previous encounter with it didn’t leave me eager for a second date.
But that Paper Plane changed things. The bourbon didn’t try to dominate; it played well with others. It brought enough spice and structure to keep the cocktail interesting without overwhelming the citrus and bitters. I respect that.
On its own, it’s lighter than what I usually reach for — but in cocktails? It’s a team player. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you want behind the bar.
Her Take (Nancy Fae)
I’m still learning how to identify flavor notes, so I approached Basil Hayden with curiosity rather than expectation. The first thing I noticed was how approachable it felt — like a bourbon that doesn’t mind if you’re still figuring out your palate.
It’s gentle, warm, and a little sweet, with just enough spice to keep things interesting. I love how it behaves in cocktails, especially ones that need a bourbon that won’t overpower the other ingredients. And yes, I still adore the belt. It’s whimsical. It’s stylish. It’s a bottle that knows how to accessorize.
Basil Hayden feels like the friend who shows up to the party dressed impeccably but never steals the spotlight. I appreciate that.

How to Enjoy
In a Paper Plane — Our gateway cocktail. Bright, balanced, and Basil Hayden at its best.
In a Boulevardier with Aperol — A lighter, more playful riff that lets the bourbon’s spice peek through.
In a Whiskey Sour — Its gentler proof makes for a beautifully smooth, approachable sour.
Neat for Beginners — If someone is new to bourbon, this is a welcoming first pour.
With Friends — Basil Hayden is a social bourbon. It thrives in company.
