About This Spirit from the Maker

Ginebra San Miguel, A Drink that Celebrates the Filipino Spirit

Over more than 189 years, Ginebra San Miguel has become more than just a drink. It has been the companion of every Filipino, through ups and downs passed on for many generations. As one of the country’s heritage brands, Ginebra San Miguel has become more than just a staple in the Filipino’s drinking occasion, but as the drinkers’ badge of strength, boldness and passion – a badge of pride. Every glass of Ginebra recognizes the hero of every Filipino, one who continues to strive for his dreams, his family and the whole nation. Ginebra San Miguel is an iconic Philippine brand that reflects the bravery, compassion and never say die spirit of every Filipino.

A Label Like No Other

On the face of every Ginebra San Miguel bottle is the iconic image of St. Michael the Archangel triumphantly defeating the devil in battle. This logo was made by renowned Filipino National Artist, Fernando Amorsolo who used this to help fund his studies abroad. From then on, this label has helped in bringing the gin product to where its state today, the undisputed world’s best selling gin that any Filipino can be truly proud of. There is a saying that if one wants to earn a work of Amorsolo, getting a Ginebra San Miguel bottle from a nearby store would be enough.

A Philippine Icon, Recognized in the World Stage

Ginebra San Miguel is not only known as Filipino tradition but also as a major player on the world stage, as referenced by the renowned publication, The Millionaire’s Club of Drinks International. And as traditions go, apart from Ginebra San Miguel getting better in time and age, it has also helped put the Philippines on the world’s hard liquor map. It is not only the undisputed world’s largest-selling gin but also the 2nd most-sold hard liquor brand in the world (159 listed million case-selling worldwide brands).

From a family-owned Spanish-era distillery in 1834, Ginebra San Miguel has become a tradition enjoyed in the Philippines, its origin, and the world over.

Imagine that about 71 bottles are consumed every minute, and that is from the Philippines alone. The Philippines accounts for about half of global gin sales, making it the world’s largest gin market.

The Filipinos’ fondness for drinking gin is mainly attributed to Ginebra San Miguel’s distinct taste, which has remained the same through the years. Its predominant flavor comes from juniper berries.

Ginebra San Miguel’s effective distribution and marketing efforts made it even more popular that the brand name has since become synonymous not only with an alcoholic drink but also with a popular Philippine basketball team known for its “never say die” spirit.

How We Feel About the Spirit

His, Hers & the Good Life: Ginebra San Miguel Gin — The Everyman’s Spirit of the Philippines

Joint Introduction

There are bottles you bring home because they’re rare, ornate, or whispered about in collector circles. And then there are bottles you bring home because they belong to the place you visited—woven into its rhythm, its people, its everyday life.

During our trip to the Philippine Islands (PI), we wanted to curate a lineup of spirits that truly represented the heart of PI. Not the luxury shelf, not the tourist shelf — the real shelf. That’s how we found ourselves standing in a grocery store aisle, smiling at the unmistakable labels of Ginebra San Miguel Gin.

The classic 700 ml bottle felt like the country’s handshake — familiar, iconic, proudly Filipino. And the Ginebra San Miguel Frasquito 350 ml, with its compact charm, felt like the pocket-sized companion of the working man. Together, they became our “everyman’s gin” representatives for the Sipping Room.

We haven’t opened them yet. And honestly? That anticipation is half the joy.

His Take (Jeff)

There’s something about these bottles that reminds me of the way a place tells its story —not through the fancy stuff, but through what people actually drink after a long day. Ginebra San Miguel feels like the Philippines’ version of the neighborhood classic: the bottle everyone recognizes, the one that shows up at family gatherings, beach days, and late-night card games.

The 700 ml bottle has that straightforward, no-nonsense look — like it’s been doing its job for generations. The Frasquito? That one makes me grin. It’s the “grab-and-go” size, the kind of bottle you’d tuck into a backpack before heading to the province for the weekend.

I like that these bottles aren’t trying to impress. They’re just … real. And that makes them perfect for our collection.

Her Take (Nancy Fae)

These bottles feel like souvenirs with soul. Not the kind you buy at an airport gift shop, but the kind you find when you’re paying attention — when you’re looking for what locals actually love.

The labels have a vintage charm, almost nostalgic, like they’ve stayed true to themselves while the world kept changing around them. The Frasquito especially caught my eye. It’s adorable in the way only a tiny bottle with big personality can be.

To me, these bottles represent the heartbeat of the Philippines — accessible, unpretentious, and full of stories. They remind me of the warmth we felt everywhere we went, the laughter, the hospitality, the sense of community. These aren’t just bottles; they’re memories in glass.

Joint Closing — His, Hers & the Good Life

His Final Note:   These bottles are proof that greatness doesn’t always come with a high price tag or a fancy pedigree. Sometimes it comes in the form of a gin that’s been part of a nation’s everyday life for nearly two centuries.

Her Final Note:   They’re humble, iconic, and beautifully Filipino. And they make me smile every time I see them on our shelf—like a postcard from a place that welcomed us with open arms.

The Good Life:   It’s not about collecting the rarest bottles. It’s about collecting the ones that mean something. And these? They mean the world.

How We Will Enjoy These Bottles

When the moment feels right—maybe a warm Alabama evening, maybe a celebration, maybe just a quiet night in the Sipping Room—we’ll finally open these bottles.

We imagine starting with a simple pour neat, just to honor the spirit in its purest form. Then perhaps a glass over ice, letting the chill soften the edges and open up the botanicals. And because Ginebra San Miguel is famously mixed in the Philippines, we’ll likely try it the local way too—maybe with citrus, maybe with soda, maybe with a playful twist inspired by our travels.

Whatever the moment becomes, we know this: We’ll be tasting more than gin. We’ll be tasting the Philippines.
