A Night at Li’l Mazzara’s — His & Hers
Downtown Athens has a way of wrapping you in its charm before you even step foot inside a restaurant. The square glows with that small‑city warmth — families strolling, storefronts that feel like they’ve been part of the community forever, and a sense of togetherness that makes you slow down and breathe a little deeper. Just off that familiar square sits Li’l Mazzara’s, a place that looks unassuming from the outside, almost like one of those old‑school “hole in the wall” gems you only discover by word of mouth. But the moment you walk in, the atmosphere shifts. It’s cozy, welcoming, and humming with the kind of energy that tells you the food is going to be good — really good.

We were meeting our dear friends, Dean and Stacie Della Pella, for dinner, and the moment we saw them already seated, we knew the night was off to a perfect start. What followed was an evening of cocktails, laughter, indulgent Italian dishes, and the kind of easy conversation that reminds you why nights out with friends matter.

His Take (Jeff)
Athens may be a small, quaint city, but it carries itself with a big‑city confidence — and Li’l Mazzara’s fits right into that personality. Nestled just off the square, the restaurant feels like stepping into a familiar hometown gathering spot. But the moment you open the menu, you realize this place isn’t trying to be cute or quaint. It’s here to compete. It’s here to say, “I may be the little brother to Huntsville’s Mazzara’s, but I can stand on my own.”
And I was ready to experience it with my amazing wife of almost 25 years and our great friends, the Della Pella's.
Cocktails
I always like to ease into a night out with a cocktail — something special, something crafted. Li’l Mazzara’s lists their Old Fashioned as a house special, and that’s all the invitation I needed. I ordered a smoked Old Fashioned with Basil Hayden Dark Rye, and the presentation alone was worth the price of admission.

The drink arrived concealed under a smoke‑filled serving tray. When Andrew, our waiter, lifted the cover, it felt like a prize fighter emerging through a haze before the main event. The aroma of charred oak drifted across the table, and all of us immediately said the same thing: “That smells amazing.” The cocktail delivered on every note — pepper from the rye, sweetness from the syrups and bitters, hints of vanilla, caramel, fruit, nuttiness, and oak. A perfect balance.
My second drink was a classic Old Fashioned with Bulleit Bourbon — simple, clean, and chosen so the smoke wouldn’t compete with my entrée.

Appetizers
Appetizers are my favorite way to settle into a night with friends. We ordered two:
Carmela’s Meatballs
Semolina Crusted Calamari
Both were incredible. The meatballs were perfectly seasoned, generously coated in Bolognese and Parmesan, and served with focaccia that made scraping the bowl feel like a competitive sport. The calamari? One word: AMAZING. The peppered crust, the spicy citrus aioli, the sweet banana peppers — it was a fusion of flavors that hit every note. My only complaint was the same one I always have with great appetizers: I didn’t want to share.
Main Course
Choosing a main course was a journey. I’m usually a “first thing that catches my eye” kind of guy, but tonight I overthought it — something my wife lovingly teases me about. I landed on the Pappardelle Pasta with house‑made pasta, Mazzara’s chorizo, red pepper, onion, and Grana Padano.
This dish was a masterpiece. Creamy cheeses, savory heat from the chorizo and peppers, all harmonizing instead of competing. Every bite was balanced, rich, and memorable. The kind of dish that makes you debate whether to order it again next time or explore the rest of the menu.
And honestly? I think next time I’ll overthink again — not because this dish wasn’t perfect, but because everything on that menu deserves a chance.

Her Take (Nancy Fae)
Walking into Li’l Mazzara’s and seeing Dean and Stacie already seated felt like the perfect start to the evening. I had saved my appetite for dinner, so I was more than ready to dive in. Our waiter, Andrew, took great care of us from the start.
Before ordering, the Della Pellas introduced us to Megan, the bartender, who came over to our table. The house cocktail menu didn’t quite speak to me, so I asked her for something sweet and beachy — something that felt like a little vacation in a glass. She returned with a gorgeous cocktail made with Bacardi rum, pineapple, muddled strawberry, lemon juice, and a strawberry garnish. It was exactly what I wanted: fruity, refreshing, and delicious.

I have to give a special nod to Jeff’s smoked Old Fashioned. Andrew’s presentation was flawless, and the reveal was dramatic enough that I filmed it. The smoke, the aroma, the whole moment — it was worth capturing.
When it came time to choose my entrée, my first instinct was to order the Shrimp Scampi. I’ve had it before, and it was sublime — buttery, bright, and unforgettable. But I wanted to break out of my norms and try something new, so I went with Carmela’s Meatballs & Pasta instead. The house‑made fettuccine, rich Bolognese, and grated Parmesan were perfectly done and comforting in all the right ways. I probably could have finished the entire plate, but I was committed to saving room for the cocktail I planned to enjoy later at the cigar lounge, so I shared some with Jeff.

When the dessert menu came around, I hesitated — I usually save room for dessert — but again, the cigar lounge cocktail won my attention.
Overall, the night was everything I hoped it would be: wonderful drinks, delicious food, and even better company. Li’l Mazzara’s delivered on every front, and we’ll absolutely be back.
Overall Thoughts
Our evening at Li’l Mazzara’s reminded us why we love dining in Downtown Athens. The restaurant may be small, but it carries itself with confidence — warm hospitality, thoughtful cocktails, and dishes that feel crafted with intention. And part of that hospitality comes from the people. Brandon, the restaurant’s manager, made his rounds as he always does, stopping by tables with a charm and friendliness that feels like the cherry on top of an already perfect sundae. We chatted with him on our way out, and his warmth sealed the night with that final touch of genuine care.
Sharing the evening with the Della Pella's made it even better, turning a simple dinner into a memory. From smoked cocktails to house‑made pasta, from laughter around the table to the anticipation of our next stop at the cigar lounge, the night flowed effortlessly. Li’l Mazzara’s proved that it may be “little” in name, but it’s big in flavor, charm, and heart.
Nights like this — good friends, good food, and moments worth savoring — are exactly what we celebrate through His, Hers & the Good Life. And Li’l Mazzara’s fits right into that story. We’ll be back. Again and again.
