Introduction
When we first started curating our Sipping Room, we promised ourselves we’d build a collection that wasn’t just impressive — it would be representative. A spectrum of spirits, from everyday charmers to the elusive unicorns whispered about in bourbon circles. And of course, the unicorn of unicorns — Pappy Van Winkle — was on that list.
We’d heard the chatter: “It’s overhyped.” “It’s impossible to get.” “It’s not worth the secondary price.” And honestly, we believed some of it. But in late 2025, when the bourbon boom finally exhaled, we spotted a Pappy 15 on the secondary market that didn’t make us clutch our pearls. We bought it — still at a price we won’t admit publicly — and placed it reverently on the top shelf. A trophy. A promise. A someday.
Then March 2026 arrived with an email from Total Wine Nashville: “Congratulations, you’ve won the lottery for a Pappy 15.” MSRP-ish. Two-hour drive? Didn’t matter. We were already in the car.
Two bottles meant one thing: we could finally open one. And when our dear friend Rob’s birthday rolled around in August, we uncorked the legend. What followed was laughter, flavor debates, and the kind of shared joy that makes a bottle truly worth opening.
More About the 15 Year Old
Among the Van Winkle expressions, the 15 Year Old sits in a sweet spot — literally and figuratively. It’s old enough to carry deep maturity but young enough to keep its vibrancy. The 20 and 23-year expressions lean heavily into oak and nostalgia; the 10 and 12-year expressions are delightful but less complex.
The 15-year? It’s the Goldilocks pour.

I’ll be honest. I went into this tasting ready to be skeptical. Too many people say the hype isn’t worth it, especially at secondary prices. But once we uncorked it, the nose alone told me we were in for something special.
I got caramel immediately — big, warm, unmistakable. Then apricot, citrus, even a little raisin. Floral notes, too: orange blossom, maybe lavender. The complexity on the nose was wild.
The first sip hit with cherry and sweet fruit right on the front of the tongue. The heat from the 107 proof showed up, but it didn’t punch — it eased in, then stepped aside for brown sugar, vanilla, honey, and a finish that lingered beautifully. The sweetness comes back after the heat fades, and that’s what sets it apart. Most bourbons give you heat that overstays its welcome. This one knows when to exit.
Is it worth secondary prices? No. But at $300? Absolutely. It’s unique. It’s refined. And it’s one of the few bourbons I struggle to compare to anything else in our cabinet.

I’m still learning how to identify flavor notes, so I always start with what I smell first — and for me, it was caramel. Strong, warm caramel. Then the fruit started showing up: apricot, peach - the stone fruit sweetness that made me smile because I actually recognized it.
On the palate, the cherry came through right away. The heat was there, but it didn’t burn my esophagus like some higher-proof bourbons do. It was gentle, almost polite. And once the warmth faded, the vanilla stepped forward. Soft, sweet, comforting vanilla.
I loved that it didn’t overwhelm me. I loved that I could actually pick out flavors. And I loved that we opened it for Rob’s birthday because sharing something rare makes it feel even more special.
