In whichever millennium you find yourself, orgeat (traditionally an almond-based syrup) will be a quiet but powerful way to provide a nutty and textural boost to many styles of cocktail. All nuts will work- and even fruit pits, or sesame! Sother Teague's here to demonstrate how a teeny touch of tahini can transform an already tempting blend whose need for seed has our minds racing to the islands and beyond!

The Cocktail Recipe

INCREDIENTS
2 oz Canadian whisky
3/4 oz pineapple juice
1/2 oz Sother's subtropic spice syrup
1/2 oz super lemon juice
1 heaping tsp tahini
2 dashes (not drops) creole bitters
INSTRUCTIONS
If your fridge makes crushed ice, skip to step 2. If not, make enough by hand to fill a highball glass. Do not use a blender. Fill a Ziploc freezer bag (or Lewis bag) with ice cubes, cover with a towel, then slowly crush the ice with a wooden mallet or other blunt object. Easy does it! You want small shards of ice, not a slushie. Set aside.
Add all the ingredients to a shaker. Fill the shaker with ice cubes and shake vigorously until it is ice-cold and shows frost on the outside (15-30 seconds),
Strain the shaker's contents into a double rocks glass over the crushed ice.

How We Feel About the Cocktail
The 4,000 Year Grind — Our Experience
There’s something undeniably fun about gathering ingredients that don’t normally share the same shelf — Canadian whisky, pineapple juice, spice syrup, lemon, bitters, and yes… tahini. It feels like a little adventure before the first sip even happens.
Once everything came together in the shaker, the drink transformed into a frosty, golden blend that promised both comfort and curiosity.
🌬️ Nose
The aroma greets you with warmth and brightness all at once.
The rye whisky rises first, offering that familiar grainy spice and a touch of herbal sharpness.
Beneath it, the tahini adds a soft, nutty whisper — not loud, but grounding, like the base note of a good perfume.
Pineapple and super lemon bring a lively citrus lift, giving the nose a tropical edge without becoming sweet.
The creole bitters and spice syrup add a faint echo of baking spice, hinting at depth to come.
It’s an inviting nose — warm, bright, and quietly complex.
🍍 Palate
The first sip is where the magic happens.
The tahini doesn’t taste like sesame outright; instead, it gives the cocktail a silky, almost creamy texture that feels luxurious over crushed ice. That texture becomes the backbone of the drink.
Pineapple juice brings a juicy, refreshing sweetness.
Super lemon snaps everything into balance with a clean, citrusy edge.
The subtropic spice syrup folds in warmth — ginger, clove, and a whisper of tropical spice.
The rye whisky threads through the center, adding structure and a pleasant bite that keeps the drink from drifting into dessert territory.
Each sip feels layered, evolving as the crushed ice melts and the flavors stretch out.
🔥 Finish
The finish lingers longer than expected — warm, textured, and quietly satisfying.
The rye spice tapers into a gentle heat.
The tahini leaves a soft, velvety coating on the tongue, almost like the memory of orgeat but earthier.
A final flicker of citrus and pineapple acidity keeps the ending bright.
The bitters leave a subtle herbal echo that ties everything together.
It’s the kind of finish that makes you pause for a moment before going back for another sip.
Final Thoughts
The 4,000 Year Grind is one of those cocktails that surprises you — not because it’s loud or showy, but because it’s thoughtful. The tahini adds depth without heaviness. The fruit keeps it refreshing. The rye keeps it grounded. And the spice syrup ties it all together with warmth and intention.
It’s a drink that feels ancient and modern at the same time, a little bit tropical and a little bit cozy, and exactly the kind of cocktail that reminds us why we love exploring these Shaker & Spoon boxes.
