About the Cocktail from Shaker & Spoon

Chopping, chipping, and doing that silly thing where you stand on a floating log and spin it with your feet-the working life of a woods- man is a rugged and dangerous one. It's all worth it, though, when you have something cheerful and bright to return home to. Bridging this gap between tough terrain and some much-needed warmth and joy, this cocktail sings of citrus and an oh-so-seasonal medley of apple, ginger, and spices, all kept in check by the well-weathered axe hand of Canadian whisky. After a stint out in the whiskey industry wilderness himself, our own in-house taster and fine-tuner Greg Mayer is back behind the bar with a new fall classic! Wood you care to join him for a toast?

How We Feel About the Cocktail

The Lumberjack’s Wife — A Toast to Warmth After the Wilderness

Shaker & Spoon describes The Lumberjack’s Wife as a bridge between rugged terrain and the bright, comforting welcome of home—a cocktail that sings with citrus, apple, ginger, and spice, all anchored by the steady hand of Canadian whisky. After mixing it ourselves, we found that description spot‑on. This drink feels like stepping inside after a long, cold day: cheeks flushed, boots muddy, and the promise of warmth waiting just beyond the door.

Our setup looked like a tiny workshop of its own—bottles of apple‑ginger syrup and apple‑lemon juice lined up like tools, bitters ready to add their finishing touches, and the LOT No. 40 Canadian Rye standing tall at the center. The coupe glass caught the light beautifully, its amber glow hinting at the cozy flavors to come.

Once shaken and double‑strained, the cocktail settled into the glass with a soft sheen, almost like polished wood. And from the first moment, it invited us in.

🍂 Nose

The aroma rose gently, offering a bright burst of lemon layered over warm apple. The ginger added a subtle zing—more warming than sharp—while the rye whisky contributed a grounding note of oak and spice. Together, the scent felt like opening the door to a cabin kitchen where citrus is being zested and apples are simmering on the stove.

🍏 Palate

The first sip was lively and refreshing, yet surprisingly deep:

  • The apple‑ginger syrup led with a crisp, orchard‑fresh sweetness

  • Super lemon juice brightened everything, giving the cocktail a clean, invigorating lift

  • Creole bitters added a whisper of baking spice—clove, anise, something almost holiday‑like

  • Spiced apple bitters rounded the edges with warmth and complexity

  • The Canadian whisky held it all together, offering structure, spice, and a touch of rye heat

The balance was remarkable: bright but not sharp, sweet but never syrupy, spicy without overwhelming. It tasted like fall without leaning into cliché—more forest trail than pumpkin patch.

🔥 Finish

The finish lingered with gentle ginger warmth and a soft echo of apple. A hint of rye spice carried through, leaving a pleasant tingle that invited another sip. As it faded, the citrus reappeared—clean, refreshing, almost palate‑cleansing. It’s the kind of finish that makes you pause for a moment, appreciating how each ingredient leaves its mark before stepping aside.

Final Thoughts

The Lumberjack’s Wife is a cocktail that feels both sturdy and tender—much like the story it’s named for. It’s bright enough for an afternoon pick‑me‑up yet comforting enough for a cool evening. We loved how the apple and ginger played together, how the bitters added depth, and how the Canadian whisky kept everything grounded.

It’s a drink that reminds you to slow down, shake off the day, and savor the warmth waiting at home.
