How We Feel About the Spirit
Trader Vic’s Macadamia Nut Liqueur: The Sweetest Little Treasure Hunt in Tennessee
Written by Nancy Fae for His, Hers & the Good Life
Introduction
Some bottles arrive in the Sipping Room with a quiet dignity. Others arrive with a full‑blown adventure story, complete with a quest, a phone call, and an 80‑mile drive through Tennessee. Trader Vic’s Macadamia Nut Liqueur is firmly in the latter category.
We first met this little beauty at the Ledges Mixology Class in September 2026. Joey —cocktail wizard, flavor whisperer, and general enabler of our bottle‑collecting habits —sweetened my Coffee Old Fashioned with it, and I lit up like someone had just handed me a backstage pass to the Good Life. Later, when he used it again in the Cherry Old Fashioned recipe, the cocktail was so delicious it practically demanded a spot on our shopping list.
Total Wine Nashville didn’t carry it. Trader Vic’s pointed us to the closest retailer — Port Royal Liquors in Spring Hill, TN. Eighty miles away. Naturally, I called. Naturally, they had it. Naturally, the gentleman said he’d hold the bottles. And naturally, once I had even the faintest excuse to be in that direction, I made the trek.
Some bottles you buy. Some bottles you earn.
His Take (Jeff)
When Nancy Fae came home from the mixology class glowing about that Coffee Old Fashioned — specifically the moment Joey topped it off with the macadamia nut liqueur — I knew this bottle was going to be trouble in the best way. Then the Cherry Old Fashioned came along, and that cocktail sealed the deal.
So when she told me she was driving 80 miles to pick up a couple of bottles, I didn’t question it. I already understood the mission. This liqueur brings a smooth, nutty richness that plays beautifully with whiskey, adding depth without stealing the spotlight. It’s tropical, warm, and just different enough to make a cocktail feel special.
Any bottle that inspires that kind of happiness — and a road trip — is a keeper.
Her Take (Nancy Fae)
I’m still learning how to identify flavor notes, but this one makes it easy. It’s creamy, nutty, and warm — like macadamia cookies in liquid form. It doesn’t smack you with sweetness; instead, it glides in with a soft, buttery richness that makes cocktails feel cozy and indulgent.
I love how Joey used it: first to sweeten my Coffee Old Fashioned, then as a supporting ingredient in the Cherry Old Fashioned. It’s a background player with main‑character energy. And now that it’s in our collection, I feel like we’ve added a little tropical mischief to the Sipping Room.
Also, I’m proud of my 80‑mile dedication. Some people collect stamps. I collect spirits with stories.
Closing in the His, Hers & the Good Life Style
His (Jeff)
This bottle is a reminder that great cocktails don’t always come from the big-name spirits. Sometimes the magic is in the unexpected ingredients — the ones you hunt down, the ones that surprise you, the ones that make you say, “Oh yeah, that’s the good stuff.”
Her (Nancy Fae)
Trader Vic’s Macadamia Nut Liqueur feels like a reward. A little adventure, a little sweetness, a little tropical flair. It’s the kind of bottle that makes me smile every time I see it on the shelf because I know exactly what it took to get it there.
The Good Life
The Good Life is built on moments — mixology classes, shared cocktails, road trips, and bottles with stories. This one fits right in. It’s delicious, it’s unique, and it reminds us that sometimes the journey to the bottle is just as fun as the drink inside it.
