About This Spirit from The Whisky Advocate

Virginia Distillery Co. Brewer's Coalition Hardywood Gingerbread Stout Cask

Score 93 ● ABV: 50% ● Price: $50 ● Style: American Single Malt ● Origin: Virginia

Through its Brewer’s Coalition series, Virginia Distillery Co. puts the spotlight on beer barrels from popular breweries— in this case, to superb effect. Secondary maturation in gingerbread stout casks has imbued this with scents of sweet cereal grain, baking spices, ginger, cocoa, and pear. The palate is well-spiced and mouthwatering with cinnamon, vanilla frosting, and berries; the finish turns darker while deliciously trailing off to dark chocolate and honey.

How We Feel About the Spirit

Virginia Distillery Co. Hardywood Gingerbread Stout Cask Review: A Toast to #17 on the Top 20 of 2024

Written by Nancy Fae for His, Hers & the Good Life

Introduction

The inaugural year of our Sipping Room collection will always feel a little legendary — nineteen bottles hunted down from Whisky Advocate’s Top 20 of 2024, each one a story, a scramble, a small victory. But few bottles came with the emotional whiplash of the Virginia Distillery Co. Brewer’s Coalition Hardywood Gingerbread Stout Cask Finish.

We’d searched our local spots, hoping to find Virginia represented somewhere on a shelf. Nothing. Not even a whisper of an American Single Malt from the Commonwealth. So we rolled the dice and checked Virginia Distillery’s website. And there it was — the winning bottle, Score 93, ABV 50%, sitting pretty and available for purchase.

Score!

Until it wasn’t.

They don’t ship to Alabama. Hearts sank. Dramatically.

But then — plot twist — they do ship to Tennessee. Jeff has family in Tennessee. A quick call, a generous yes, and suddenly we were back in business. Score again.

This bottle arrived with a sense of triumph, and when we opened it and shared pours with friends, the fascination was instant. The stout barrels leave a whisper of gingerbread cookies on the palate — unexpected, playful, and absolutely delightful. It’s the kind of bottle that reminds you why the Sipping Room exists: to chase stories, savor surprises, and celebrate the good life one pour at a time.

His Take (Jeff)

I love a bottle with a backstory, and this one came with a full saga. Any whiskey that requires family coordination across state lines already earns a spot on my shelf. But the real win is what’s inside.

The stout cask finish is what hooked me. I wasn’t sure what gingerbread stout would do to an American Single Malt, but the first sip answered that question fast. There’s this warm, cookie-adjacent note — gingerbread without the sugar rush — that sits right in the mid-palate. Not gimmicky. Not overly sweet. Just a clever nudge from the barrel.

It’s a whiskey that feels seasonal without being tied to a season. I could sip this in December by the fire or in July after grilling steaks. It’s versatile, memorable, and honestly one of the more fun bottles in our Top 20 lineup.

And yes, I’m still proud of the Tennessee family assist. That’s teamwork.

Her Take (Nancy Fae)

This bottle charmed me before I even tasted it. The hunt, the near heartbreak, the rescue via Tennessee. It all felt like the kind of story the Sipping Room was built for. But the pour itself sealed the deal.

The gingerbread stout influence is subtle but enchanting. It doesn’t shout; it leans in. There’s a warm spice that feels like a memory — holiday baking, cozy kitchens, the first bite of a ginger cookie still warm from the oven. But wrapped inside an American Single Malt, it becomes something more grown-up, more refined.

I love how this bottle bridges worlds: beer and whiskey, Virginia and Tennessee, stout richness and malt elegance. It’s a conversation starter, a crowd-pleaser, and a reminder that the Top 20 list isn’t just about rankings. It’s about discovery.

Sharing this with friends and watching everyone pause mid-sip to say, “Wait… gingerbread?” was pure joy.

Closing in the His, Hers & the Good Life Style

His (Jeff)

This bottle is proof that a good whiskey doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs character. And this one has plenty. The gingerbread note keeps me coming back.

Her (Nancy Fae)

A bottle with warmth, whimsy, and a story worth retelling. It’s exactly the kind of spirit that makes the Sipping Room feel alive.

The Good Life

The Good Life is built on shared pours, shared stories, and shared victories — big or small. This bottle brought all three. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best finds require a little extra effort, a little family teamwork, and a willingness to chase the unexpected. That’s why it belongs in our Good Life.

How to Enjoy

  • Neat: The best way to appreciate the gingerbread stout influence. Let it open for a few minutes.

  • With a Drop of Water: Softens the spice and brings forward a warm malt sweetness.

  • In a Snifter: Enhances the aromatic gingerbread note — highly recommended.

  • Paired With: Dark chocolate, ginger snaps, or a stout beer for a playful echo.

  • Seasonal Serve: A holiday evening pour, but just as lovely on a summer night with friends.
