Tasting Notes
Nose: Honey, lemon curd, vanilla pod and a waft of ginger.
Palate: Crystallised orange, coconut, almond, white pepper and a thread of beeswax.
Finish: Long, sweet-spicy, with citrus zest and gentle oak.
Nectar D'Or, named with a slightly grandiose nod to the French for 'golden nectar', is the Sauternes-finished member of Glenmorangie's extra-matured trio. After ten years in ex-bourbon American oak the spirit is moved into barriques that previously held the great sweet wines of Sauternes, the botrytised dessert wines of Bordeaux's Garonne region, for a further two years of maturation.
It is bottled at 46% without chill filtration. That higher strength matters: the wax-and-citrus signature of Glenmorangie's tall-still spirit is delicate by nature, and the extra alcohol holds the texture together while the wine cask layers its honeyed sweetness on top. The result is one of the more distinctive wine-finished Scotches on the market — closer to a well-made Tokaji-finished whisky in feel than to the usual sherry-bomb territory.
Bill Lumsden has long argued that a successful finish should add a third dimension rather than redecorate the room, and Nectar D'Or is a textbook example. The Sauternes influence is unmissable but never gloopy; the bourbon-cask vanilla and the underlying spirit's gentle citrus carry through to the finish.
It is a dram that does well after a good dinner, particularly with anything custardy or stone-fruited. Among Highland twelve-year-olds it remains a confident piece of work, and a reminder of what made Glenmorangie's wood programme famous in the first place.

Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or is built on a premise that sounds almost too simple: take one of the Highland's freshest, most floral distillate characters and rest it in Sauternes casks until the sweetness tilts from malt to orchard. Twelve years on, the result is as forward and generous as it sounds. Mirabelles, apricots, honeysuckle and a faint Muscat-grape lift crowd the nose before the spirit even opens up. Dandelion, lilac, fresh butter and tropical suggestions of pineapple in syrup stack behind them. It is a nose that commits fully to its premise, and the commitment is convincing. On the palate the delivery thickens considerably. Marmalade and yellow fruit dominate early, then honey and vanilla press in, and white chocolate brings a creamy weight that the Original emphatically lacks. The 46% ABV keeps it from collapsing under its own sweetness: ginger and pepper arrive mid-palate, oak adds a structural dryness, and a mocha note in the aftertaste gives the richness something to lean against. The architecture here is fuller and richer than Glenmorangie's base expression, and the spice from the oak is better integrated than the sweet top notes might lead you to expect on the nose. The finish is medium in length, a soft, creamy fade of peach, ginger and wood with a dry close. It does not linger the way a heavily sherried malt might, but the softness is part of the design rather than a shortcoming. The one genuine caveat worth naming is the sweetness: buttery, sherbet-edged and pervasive, it can push distinguishing notes to the margins at full strength. Kiwi, cinnamon cake, the drier grain character, the cereal and the gentle clove-like spice become easier to find with a few drops of water and a few minutes in the glass. Give it room and the complexity that the sweetness initially buries does emerge. As the flagship finished expression in the Glenmorangie range, the Nectar D'Or has held its position as the one to beat for good reason. The Sauternes influence is genuine and generously applied, and the result is recognisably Highland in structure while being something else entirely in character. Buy it.
How it tastes
Even among the Highland field, what sets this apart is red-wine fruit, fiery ginger and a chilli kick.
TASTING NOTES (DRAMFINDER EDITORIAL)
Nose: Mirabelles, apricots and honeysuckle come first, followed by dandelion and lilac, a thread of fresh butter, and a faint Muscat suggestion that gives it a lifted, almost wine-like brightness. Hints of pineapple in syrup and lemon pie sit underneath, sweetening an already generous opening.
Palate: Thick and richer than expected, with marmalade, yellow fruit, honey and vanilla at the centre, and a creamy white chocolate weight throughout. Ginger and pepper arrive to provide structure, oak adds a counterbalancing dryness, and a mocha note deepens the aftertaste into something more than straightforward sweetness.
Finish: Soft and creamy, peach and ginger fading into dry wood, with a quiet close that wraps up tidily rather than lingering. Medium in length, but the gentleness feels considered rather than thin.

Introduction
Every great collection has its accidental treasures — the bottles that weren’t supposed to be part of the story but somehow become essential chapters. In the inaugural year of building our Sipping Room and chasing Whisky Advocate’s Top 20 of 2024, Jeff and I found ourselves wandering the aisles of our local ABC store, magazine nowhere in sight, fingers crossed, hearts hopeful.
There it was: Glenmorangie The Nectar D’Or. Golden. Elegant. Whispering sweet promises. We looked at each other with that “this might be it” expression and gently placed it in the cart, proud of our early find.
Back home, reality arrived with a thud. The Top 20 bottle was The Nectar, not The Nectar D’Or. Our hearts sank — but only briefly. Because as we dug deeper, we discovered that The Nectar D’Or wasn’t a mistake at all. It was the predecessor. The beloved elder sibling. A highly regarded darling in its own right.
And now it sits in our Sipping Room, waiting patiently for its moment — likely a blind taste test beside The Nectar, where we’ll see whether our “misfire” was actually fate.

I’ll admit it. I felt that sting when we realized we grabbed the wrong bottle. But the more I read about The Nectar D’Or, the more I started rooting for it. There’s something appealing about a whisky that doesn’t need the spotlight to be great. It’s like the quiet guy at the party who ends up being the most interesting one in the room.
The bottle itself looks refined, almost regal, and I’m curious to see how those sweet wine casks show up in the glass. I’m expecting something silky, maybe a little dessert-like, but still grounded in that Glenmorangie backbone I enjoy. And honestly, I’m excited for the blind taste test. There’s nothing like going in without expectations — just letting the whisky speak for itself.
