Hers, Hers & the Good Life: A Mother–Daughter Night at KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot in Opelika
By Nancy Fae
Joint Introduction
There’s something wonderfully grounding about slipping into Auburn for a mother–daughter night, especially when it’s just the two of us. No Jeff this time, which means this evening earns its own special category: a Hers, Hers & the Good Life adventure. Ashley had been wanting to share one of her favorite spots near campus, and honestly, any excuse to spend time with her is already a win. Add food, laughter, and a little culinary chaos? Even better.

Her Take – Ashley
I picked KPOT because it’s one of my go‑to places when I’m out with my girlfriends. It’s fun, it’s different, and it’s basically dinner with a built‑in activity. You grab your raw ingredients from the bar — meats, veggies, noodles, dumplings, all the good stuff — and then cook everything right at your table. I knew Mom would love it because she’s Filipino‑American and always down for Asian flavors, but I also knew she’d never been anywhere quite like this.
Normally I stick with the Hot Pot option, but Mom wanted Korean BBQ. And at KPOT, everyone at the table has to choose the same option or upgrade to both. So suddenly I had access to Korean BBQ … and absolutely no idea how to cook it. But we started things off with Piña Coladas, which felt like the right way to begin any mother–daughter culinary adventure. From there, we just dove in—one sizzling grill, one bubbling pot, and a whole lot of laughter.

Her Take – Nancy Fae
I love trying new places, especially when they’re favorites of Ashley’s. KPOT looked modern and lively the moment we walked in, but when I sat down at that table — with four burners, a giant grill, and a whole system I didn’t understand. I felt like I’d been dropped into a cooking competition I didn’t sign up for.
I walked over to the bar of raw meats, seafood, vegetables, sauces, and oils… and immediately felt overwhelmed. I stopped a waiter, who was clearly juggling too many tables, and told him I was new and needed help. He gave me a quick rundown: grab food, grab oils, cook it on the grill. That was it. No tutorial, no guidance, no “here’s how not to burn your dinner.” I needed a training video.
But after a deep breath, I reminded myself that I do have cooking skills. So I picked out beef, chicken, shrimp, veggies, ramen noodles, and of course — steamed rice. I started grilling, boiling, mixing, and hoping for the best. And you know what? The food turned out delicious. The Piña Colada didn’t hurt either.
My only real complaint? It was hot. Between the grill, the burners, and the packed restaurant, I felt like I was cooking in more ways than one. A little extra air conditioning would’ve been a blessing.
Joint Closing – Hers, Hers & the Good Life
Hers (Ashley):
A favorite spot is even better when I get to share it with Mom.
Hers (Nancy Fae):
Confusing? Yes. Overwhelming? Absolutely. Delicious and memorable? Without question.
The Good Life:
Sometimes the best nights are the ones where you laugh, learn, sweat a little, and savor every bite—together.
