How We Feel About the Spirit
Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila: A Toast to Altos, Altos, and the Good Life
Written by Nancy Fae for His, Hers & the Good Life
Introduction
Some bottles arrive in our Sipping Room because they’re rare, some because they’re beautiful, and some because they simply taste fantastic. Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila earned its place for all three reasons — but also for one that hits a little closer to home.
We’d heard of Altos before, but it didn’t truly land on our radar until the Ledges Mixology Class in July 2026. Joey, the Ledges bartender and teacher, used Altos in his Margarita recipe, and the cocktail was bright, balanced, and downright irresistible. Jeff, Ashley, and I made it ourselves during the class, and by the time we clinked glasses, we knew Altos Plata needed to be added to our Sipping Room shopping list.
But the real clincher? Ashley and I are both alto singers. How could we not bring home a bottle that practically sings our name?
What Is an Alto Singer?
An alto is the warm, velvety middle voice of the choir — the one that holds the harmony together while sopranos chase the spotlight. Altos are the grounding force, the steady thread, the ones who make the music feel full and rich. We’re the quiet heroes of choral arrangements … even if we occasionally daydream about stealing the melody.
For your listening pleasure, we have linked Ashley’s high school senior solo performance of “Alto’s Lament,” a witty, self-aware musical theater piece in which a long-suffering alto humorously bemoans always singing harmony instead of getting her moment center stage. It’s clever, charming, and perfectly captures the alto spirit.
His Take (Jeff)
Altos Plata is one of those bottles that proves you don’t need to spend a fortune to get quality. I like its clean, crisp profile — nothing fussy, nothing overdone. It’s the kind of tequila that behaves exactly how you want it to in a cocktail. Joey’s Margarita at the Ledges was the perfect example: bright citrus, smooth agave, and a finish that doesn’t fight you. This bottle earns its spot on the shelf.
Her Take (Nancy Fae)
I’m still learning how to identify flavor notes, but Altos Plata feels approachable. On the nose, I get something fresh — almost like a breeze through a citrus grove. The palate is gentle and clean, with a soft agave sweetness that doesn’t overwhelm. It’s not loud or dramatic; it’s steady, supportive … very alto-like. I appreciate a bottle that feels friendly to beginners and still interesting enough for seasoned sippers.
Closing in the His, Hers & the Good Life Style
His (Jeff)
Altos Plata is a workhorse tequila — reliable, smooth, and perfect for mixing. It’s the bottle I reach for when I want a Margarita that tastes like summer without trying too hard.
Her (Nancy Fae)
This bottle makes me smile. It reminds me of singing harmony with Ashley, of Joey’s mixology class, and of discovering new favorites together. It’s a simple pleasure with sentimental charm.
The Good Life
The Good Life is built on moments — learning something new, sharing a cocktail, laughing over a song that pokes fun at your own voice part. Altos Plata fits right in: a bottle that brings together flavor, memory, and a touch of musical humor. It’s a harmony worth keeping.
