Biscuits, Moonshine & Memories: Our Good Life Visit to The Loveless Cafe
By Nancy Fae
Joint Introduction
Some traditions feel stitched into the fabric of a family — the kind that resurface at just the right moment, reminding you of who you are and who you love. For us, The Loveless Cafe has always been one of those traditions. Years ago, we’d make the drive with Jackie — Jeff’s mom — and her boyfriend, Nick, settle into that familiar blue‑checkered charm, and enjoy a meal that felt more like a reunion than a restaurant visit.
This year, for our visit with Jackie and Nick, Jeff suggested we head back to Loveless. It had been far too long, and the idea felt like opening a door we hadn’t walked through in years. Ashley joined us, turning it into a full family outing — the kind where you arrive hungry, thirsty, and ready to savor every moment. Some things had changed, but the heart of Loveless hadn’t. And that’s exactly why this visit mattered.

About The Loveless Cafe
The Loveless Cafe began in 1951 as a modest roadside stop serving fried chicken and biscuits to travelers passing through the Tennessee countryside. Over time, its reputation grew — not because it tried to reinvent itself, but because it stayed true to its roots. Today, Loveless stands as a Nashville icon, known for scratch-made Southern dishes, warm hospitality, and a commitment to preserving the traditions that made it beloved in the first place. It’s a place where recipes are honored, stories are shared, and guests are welcomed like family.

How Our Visit Unfolded
We planned our visit to coincide with time spent with Jackie and Nick — something we used to do once a year but hadn’t done in far too long. Before we even pulled into Loveless, we noticed they now have an online reservation system, which felt like a small miracle compared to the old hour-long wait. And once we arrived, we saw the front parking lot was blocked off, giving the restaurant a sweet, picturesque view that felt almost like a postcard.
But the moment we stepped inside, the familiar warmth washed over us. Jared, our waiter, greeted us with pure Southern charm — helpful, welcoming, sweet, and funny. The kind of charm that makes you feel like you’ve been coming there your whole life.
We were hungry — intentionally so — and the heat outside had us ready for cold drinks. Thankfully, Jared brought out their famous biscuits and jam right away. They were perfect with a generous spread of jam and butter — light, warm, and exactly what we needed.

Ashley ordered “Breakfast for Dinner”: a Cheese Omelet with Caramel Sweet Potatoes and a Blue Moon cocktail made with blueberries, lemonade, Sprite, and moonshine. Jeff went full Southern comfort with a hearty Country Fried Steak platter, French fries, fried okra, and the Old Glory Smooth Shine Moonshine cocktail. I ordered the legendary fried chicken with three sides — because narrowing down to two felt impossible. Hashbrown casserole, Southern creamed corn, and fried okra, paired with the Harvest Moon cocktail made with sweet peach iced tea and moonshine.

When Ashley slipped away to the restroom, I quietly asked Jared if he could do something special for her upcoming 22nd birthday. He lit up, promised to “really embarrass her,” and absolutely delivered. When she returned, he announced her birthday to the entire restaurant and led a full-room chorus of “Happy Birthday.” I thought I captured it on video — and I’m still heartbroken that I didn’t — but the moment itself was unforgettable.
Jared also offered Ashley a free birthday dessert, and she chose their delicious Blueberry Peach pie. It was the perfect sweet ending to a sweet surprise.
We laughed, we ate, we caught up with loved ones. It was exactly the kind of visit Loveless was made for.

His Take (Jeff’s Voice)
Southern food has a way of grounding you. Maybe it’s the crunch of country fried steak or the comfort of fried okra, but for me, it’s always been about who I’m sharing it with. Sitting across from Mom, Nick, Ashley, and Nancy Fae — that’s the good stuff. Loveless has always been one of those places where time slows down and family feels close. The food was great, the moonshine was smooth, and the company made it perfect.
Her Take (Nancy Fae’s Voice)
Loveless feels like stepping into a warm memory. The charm, the hospitality, the food — it all wraps around you like a quilt. Jared’s sweetness, the biscuits, the laughter, Ashley’s birthday surprise … it was everything I love about Southern dining and everything I love about family time. My fried chicken and trio of sides were what I hoped for, and the Harvest Moon cocktail was the perfect finishing touch. It was a night filled with flavor, joy, and connection.
Joint Closing — His, Hers & The Good Life
His:
Good food tastes better when you share it with the people who matter most. Loveless reminded me of that.
Hers:
Traditions become treasures when they’re shared with family. This visit filled my heart as much as my plate.
The Good Life:
It’s the blend of familiar faces, comforting flavors, and moments that become stories. That’s why Loveless fits so perfectly into our Good Life.
