About This Cigar from the Maker

The People’s Champion

“Born on the Factory Floor,” Undercrown Maduro is a direct result of the passion, ingenuity, and unbreakable spirit of our cigar rollers at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate. Featuring a delicious Connecticut River Valley Stalk-Cut and Stalk-Cured Habano binder, as well as select Brazilian Mata Fina and Nicaraguan filler leaves, the Undercrown Maduro is finished with a dark, sultry Mexican San Andres wrapper.

Today, Undercrown Maduro stands tall as a testament to the spirt of the rolleros and buncheros that lead our factory’s rolling floor – what we call in Nicaragua “the Salon.” Undercrown Maduro is world-renowned for consistently, year after year, delivering rich layers of earthy complexity backed by lush, sweet undertones. Truly a balanced smoke, this trophied Drew Estate original blend set a new standard in the world of Nicaraguan-produced, medium-bodied Maduros.

Our His and Hers Experience

His & Hers Review: The Undercrown Maduro Robusto — The Cigar the Blondie Maduro Made Us Try Next

If the Acid Blondie Maduro was our gateway cigar, then the Undercrown Maduro Robusto was the cigar the universe practically shoved into our hands. Between the Facebook group Cigar Lovers Club chanting “Try the Undercrown next!” and a Drew Estate rep nodding in solemn agreement at a local lounge, we took the hint.

So today, armed with coffee spiked with Baileys and a light breeze that absolutely refused to mind its business, we lit up the Undercrown Maduro Robusto for a true His‑and‑Hers smoke session.

Jeff’s Take: The V‑Cut vs. Guillotine Saga

Jeff started strong with the pre‑light aroma — a surprisingly complex mix of coffee, chocolate, cinnamon, baking spices, and leather,

Once lit, he called it a mild‑to‑medium smoke, subtle and not harsh, with chocolate and light coffee notes leading the way. But the real plot twist came from the cut comparison:

  • V‑cut: tighter draw, more concentrated flavor, but required lung power usually reserved for blowing up air mattresses.

  • Guillotine: easier draw, more smoke, slightly harsher because of the volume — but ultimately the winner.

Jeff took a puff from my guillotine‑cut cigar and immediately declared it superior. I agreed.

The only downside for him? Canoeing and uneven burn, likely thanks to the wind. But even with the burn drama, he found the flavor consistent through all thirds — chocolate, coffee, and a little pepper toward the end. Paired with Baileys and coffee, he called it “a really good pairing” and said it’s perfect for someone transitioning from sweet/flavored cigars into fuller‑bodied territory.

Nancy Fae’s Take: The Dark‑Cigar Myth Dies Today

I forgot to smell the cigar before lighting it — rookie move — but the first draw made up for it. Chocolate, sweetness, and baking spice hit me right away. The smoke was mild, easy, and honestly delightful.

My burn? A mess. I didn’t toast the foot evenly, the wind wasn’t helping, and I spent the first third wondering whether my uneven burn was affecting my ability to identify flavors. (Spoiler: probably.)

But the pairing? Chef’s kiss.   A sip of Baileys‑spiked coffee after a draw smoothed out any harshness and made the cigar feel even sweeter.

Somewhere in the first third, I caught myself noticing the room note — mild, pleasant, and surprisingly gentle for a dark cigar. Which brings me to my favorite revelation of the day:

I used to think dark cigars were harsh and heavy. Turns out, Maduro wrappers are sweeter than I ever expected, and I’m officially a Maduro girl now.

My ash held on like it had something to prove — even when I tried to tap it at ¾ of an inch. Construction: impressive. My nerves: less so, considering the last time ash fell in my lap.

By the second third, pepper notes started showing up, but they didn’t scare me off. If anything, I felt proud — like my palate was leveling up. By the final third, the pepper took over and the chocolate faded, but I still couldn’t put the cigar down until it literally got too hot for my fingers.

This cigar made me feel like I’m ready for more medium‑plus adventures… but not quite ready to cannonball into full‑body territory. Soon, though. Maybe.

Our Review of the Undercrown Maduro Robusto

Flavor

The Undercrown Maduro Robusto opens with pronounced chocolate and coffee notes, supported by subtle sweetness and baking spice. As the cigar progresses, the profile shifts toward pepper and gentle earthiness, maintaining balance without becoming harsh. The transition from sweet cocoa in the first third to richer spice in the second and final thirds creates a steady, approachable evolution.

Body

This cigar sits comfortably in the mild‑to‑medium to medium range, offering a smooth, easygoing smoke that remains accessible throughout. Despite its dark wrapper, the body stays controlled and refined, delivering sweetness early and a measured rise in pepper later on.

Construction

Construction is generally solid, with a firm ash that holds longer than expected. The draw varies depending on cut style: a V‑cut produces a tighter, more concentrated pull, while a guillotine cut allows for a fuller, easier draw with increased smoke output. Burn performance may show some unevenness in breezy conditions, but the cigar remains structurally sound.

Overall Thoughts

The Undercrown Maduro Robusto offers a consistent, well‑rounded experience marked by sweetness, cocoa, and a gradual build of pepper. Its approachable body and steady flavor progression make it a strong option for smokers exploring traditional Maduro profiles or transitioning from sweeter, flavored cigars into more classic blends. Balanced, flavorful, and reliably constructed, it stands as a commendable entry in the Maduro category.
