Blue Run Kentucky Straight High Rye Bourbon is a small-batch whiskey and is the first Blue Run product with Bourbon Hall of Famer Jim Rutledge serving as the contracted Master Distiller (on all previous Blue Run products, except Golden Rye, Jim served as the Liquid Advisor). Jim distilled this batch at Castle & Key Distillery.

How We Feel About the Spirit

Blue Run High Rye Bourbon stands out with its medium gold color, hinting at the intensity packed within. From the first sip, it delivers a youthful, rich flavor, yet feels somewhat watery, making for a whiskey that is both powerful and unrefined. The profile is big and dominating, but it lacks the complexity expected at its price point.

The nose presents a mix of cherry, pear, leather, honey, vanilla, and spice, creating an inviting warmth. Hints of milk chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, and baked pear add depth, teasing a richness that doesn’t fully translate to the palate.

Upon tasting, the whiskey hits hard with peppery spice and cinnamon, followed by sweeter notes of vanilla, honey, cherry, and pear. The lingering heat leaves a lasting impression, making this a bourbon that demands attention.
