About This Spirit from the Maker

Source: The Bottle

Ode to the Embers is a rare peated expression within the Masters Anthology. Richly aromatic, it presents intertwined notes of peat smoke, with a dominance of Oloroso sherry casks for spiced complexity, enriched with our signature Pedro Ximénez casks.

How We Feel About the Spirit

Glendronach The Master’s Anthology: Ode to The Embers – Sherry & Smoke

Why We Bought the Bottle

This bottle first landed on our radar thanks to Whisky Advocate’s Top 20 Most Exciting Whiskeys of 2025, where it earned the #12 spot. That annual list has become a guidepost for us—part discovery tool, part affirmation of our own instincts—and seeing Glendronach featured so prominently made it an easy addition to our “must‑try” list.

The real delight came when we spotted it sitting on the shelf at Total Wine in Nashville. There’s something deeply satisfying about finding a nationally celebrated bottle locally, without the chase or the markup. Glendronach’s reputation for rich sherry influence paired with the promise of smoke made this release feel like a natural fit for our collection. Curiosity, excitement, and a little bit of serendipity sealed the deal.

The Nose

Tasted blind, the whisky introduced itself with a bold and unmistakable identity. The first aroma was pure medicated Band‑Aid—that sharp, sterile, latex‑plastic note that instantly evokes a freshly opened first‑aid kit. It wasn’t a whisper; it was the dominant opening statement.

Once that initial layer settled, a softer side began to emerge. Hints of sweetness peeked through the medicinal veil, subtle but present, suggesting there was more happening beneath the clinical top notes. The tension between the Band‑Aid character and the shy sweetness made the nose unexpectedly intriguing.

The Palate

The palate confirmed what the nose promised. The medicinal profile carries straight through, echoing the same latex‑plastic impression from the first sniff. Even blind, it was clear this whisky leans heavily into phenolic territory.

Beneath that, the whisky shows its strength. It drinks like a higher‑proof single malt, delivering a firm tongue‑tingle and a steady warmth. The opening is surprisingly pleasant: a touch of sweetness followed by a creamy, almost velvety mouthfeel that adds weight and texture.

As the sip develops, the smoky side steps forward. The peat isn’t overwhelming, but it’s unmistakable—an ashy, cigarette‑like smoke that lingers long after the swallow. There’s an earthy undercurrent woven into the smoke, grounding the experience and giving it a rustic, ember‑like quality. It’s not the maritime peat of Islay; it’s drier, more charred, more reminiscent of smoldering wood than sea spray.

The Finish

The finish is persistent and expressive. A peppery spice clings to the palate, delivering a warm, prickling burn that lasts. The smoke stays too—light but steady—like the aftertaste of a cigarette that lingers even after the ember fades. Through it all, faint threads of sweetness flicker in and out, never fully taking over but never disappearing either.

It’s a finish built on contrast: sweet at the start, smoky and spicy at the end, with that medicinal thread tying the entire experience together.

Closing Thoughts

This whisky brings together contrast, tension, and character in a way that makes the experience memorable—even when the flavors challenge your expectations. The medicinal edge, the earthy smoke, the flashes of sweetness, and the lingering pepper all stack into a profile that feels intentionally layered rather than accidental. It’s not a pour that fades into the background; it asks you to pay attention, to sit with it, and to decide how you feel about its bolder choices.

In the end, Ode to The Embers lives up to its name. It feels like the last glow of a fire—smoky, warm, a little gritty, and still carrying the memory of what burned before it. It’s a whisky for exploration, for conversation, and for those nights when you want something that stands apart from the familiar.
