How We Feel About the Spirit

Los Magos Barrel‑Aged Sotol WhistlePig Edition #1: A Collaboration We Wanted to Love… But Didn’t

Every so often, a bottle comes along that feels like it was made for you. That’s exactly how we felt when we spotted Los Magos Barrel‑Aged Sotol WhistlePig Edition #1 at Total Wine in Nashville. As longtime fans of WhistlePig—collectors, really—anything bearing their name or influence immediately gets our attention. So a sotol aged in WhistlePig barrels? That sounded like an easy win.

Unfortunately, this one didn’t live up to the promise.

A Nose That Starts Off Wrong

From the first sniff, we knew we were in for something unexpected—and not in the good way. The nose opens with a faint smokiness, but it’s overshadowed by an unmistakable undertone that reminded us of cleaning supplies. There are hints of sweetness and maybe some fruit trying to peek through, but they never quite get the chance. The chemical note dominates, and once you notice it, it’s hard to ignore.

A Palate That Never Finds Its Footing

If the nose raised concerns, the palate confirmed them. The first impression is how watery it feels—thin, lacking structure, and without the depth we hoped the WhistlePig barrels would contribute. The flavor profile is muted to the point of being indistinct. There’s no real sweetness, no complexity, no defining character.

What does come through is a lingering taste that leans heavily toward a cleaning‑chemical note, and it sticks around long after the sip is gone. It’s not sharp or aggressive; it’s simply unpleasant. The more we tried to find something redeeming, the more that off‑note took center stage.

A Collaboration That Misses the Mark

We wanted to love this bottle. Truly. The concept is intriguing, and the WhistlePig connection had us excited from the start. But the execution just isn’t there. The sotol doesn’t gain anything meaningful from the barrel finish, and the barrel influence doesn’t bring the warmth, spice, or depth we associate with WhistlePig.

Instead, the result feels disjointed—neither a standout sotol nor a successful barrel‑finished experiment.

Final Thoughts: Not Worth the Price, Better as a Mixer

At the end of the day, this bottle simply didn’t justify its price point. For us, it’s not something we’d sip neat again. If anything, it might find a second life as a mixer, and even then, it would be a low‑priority mixer at best.

We’re disappointed—not just because we spent the money, but because we genuinely expected more from a WhistlePig‑associated release. This collaboration had potential, but in our glass, it never came together.

Not every bottle can be a winner. This one just wasn’t for us.
