There are lunches you schedule because you’re hungry… and then there are lunches you schedule because your soul needs a good friend, a good hug, and a good catch‑up. This one was the latter.
Nik and I hadn’t seen each other in far too long, and when life starts piling up its little updates, you need someone who knows your history, your humor, and your heart. So we planned a weekday lunch date — just me this time. Jeff and I adore each other, but we are not a buy‑one‑get‑one‑free couple. We do, in fact, leave the house independently. Shocking, I know.
Choosing the Spot (Or Letting Nik Do It for Me)
I asked Nik to pick the restaurant because I’ve been trying to break out of my comfort zone. My comfort zone, for the record, is a cozy little bubble filled with familiar menus and zero surprises. Nik, however, is a professional at nudging me toward new things.
He suggested Maple Street Biscuit Company in Madison — one of the many shiny new additions to the Clift Farm area. I’d seen it a dozen times but had never stepped inside.
Before heading out, I peeked at their menu online. At first glance, nothing jumped out at me. I don’t regularly eat Southern biscuits (I know… I live in Alabama… I’m working on it). But I told myself to be brave.
Then I saw their Signature Items — the dishes that have earned fan‑favorite status. One in particular caught my eye:
The Squawking Goat
Chicken. Crispy goat cheese. Pepper jelly.
And featured on Food Network’s Guilty Pleasures.

Arrival, Hugs, and Hydration Revelations
Nik picked me up, and of course we did the big hug. I’m a hugger. He’s a hugger. It’s our thing.
We arrived just after 11 a.m., beating the lunch rush. The place was bright, clean, and buzzing with that “weekday energy” of people grabbing a quick bite before diving back into life.
We ordered at the counter and grabbed our water cups — which is when Nik pointed out something I’ve never seen before.
Their drink machine had two water buttons:

I don’t like bubbles in my water, but I was genuinely impressed. It’s the little things that make you feel like a restaurant thought about you.
The Squawking Goat Arrives
Our food came out quickly, and let me tell you — the Squawking Goat is famous for a reason.
The chicken was tender and juicy. The pepper jelly had just enough heat to make things interesting without overwhelming the biscuit. And the goat cheese? It softened everything into this perfect sweet‑heat‑creamy harmony. I would absolutely order it again.

The meal was delicious, but the real treat was catching up with Nik. The restaurant wasn’t loud, so we could actually talk — about life, work, family, and all the little things that don’t fit into text messages.
Sometimes you don’t realize how much you’ve missed someone until you’re sitting across from them, laughing over biscuits.
