About This Spirit from the Maker
Source: Architect – Penelope Bourbon
Architecture is defined as the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. Using those same principles, we wanted to build new and distinct flavor profiles that same way an Architect creates new innovative structures.
Working in collaboration with Tonnellerie Radoux of France, the market leader in oak barrel manufacturing and innovation, we use French oak staves and their state-of-the-art OakScan® process to build a truly precise flavor profile within every bottle. After all, the best architecture leaves no room for error.

How We Feel About the Spirit
The Purchase
We picked up a bottle of Penelope Architect Straight Bourbon Whiskey after hearing whispers of its reputation—an innovative bourbon shaped by French oak staves. The name alone, Architect, promised structure, design, and artistry. It felt less like buying a bottle and more like acquiring a blueprint for flavor.
First Impressions
Uncorking the bottle released a rush of aromas:
- Wet stone minerality, like rain on pavement
- Toasted oak and buttery caramel
- Bright citrus zest, softened by vanilla and rye spice
It was a nose that hinted at both tradition and experimentation.
On the Palate
The first sip confirmed the promise:
- French oak richness, reminiscent of lightly charred French toast
- White grapes and caramel weaving through malt sweetness
- A flicker of orange peel, adding brightness and balance
The 104 proof carried warmth without harshness, making each sip bold yet approachable.
The Finish
Lingering notes of pecan pie sweetness and smoke gave way to floral rye spice. Medium in length, the finish invited reflection—like the closing lines of a well-crafted story.
The Verdict
Penelope Architect is more than a bourbon; it’s a design exercise in flavor. Each “Build” release tweaks the stave combination, making every bottle a unique expression. For enthusiasts, it’s a pour that rewards curiosity and comparison—especially against other stave-finished bourbons like Maker’s Mark 46 or Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.
