How We Feel About the Spirit

The Compromise: When Bourbon and Rye Meet in the Middle

Some bottles arrive with a reputation. Others arrive with a mystery. The Compromise, a collaborative blend from Nashtucky Whiskey Company and Nashville Barrel Company, somehow manages to be both. It’s a whiskey born from two philosophies—sweet, rich bourbon and spicy, herbal rye—meeting at a perfect 50/50 crossroads. And while we haven’t opened our bottle yet, the story behind it already feels like an invitation.

We acquired this bottle through our PourMore Whiskey Enthusiast subscription, one of those monthly surprises that keeps our Sipping Room evolving in unexpected ways. Nashville Barrel Company is a name we’ve heard praised again and again, especially among rye lovers.

Nashtucky, on the other hand, is new territory for us—an unknown partner in a blend that promises something greater than the sum of its parts.

🥃 What’s Inside the Bottle

At its core, The Compromise is a cask strength blended whiskey—bold, unapologetic, and bottled at a fiery 61.30% ABV (122.60 proof). But the beauty is in the balance:

Bourbon Component

  • 50% of the blend

  • Aged 9 years

  • Distilled in Indiana

  • Sweet, rich, classic bourbon character

Rye Component

  • 50% of the blend

  • Aged 7 years

  • Distilled in Kentucky

  • Spicy, herbal, aromatic rye energy

Together, they create a profile described as “Sweet, Rich Bourbon, Spicy, Herbal Rye: Together They Create Something Greater Than Either Alone.” It’s a simple line, but it captures the heart of this bottle—a marriage of contrast and complement.

🌾 Why This Blend Intrigues Us

We’re rye fans at heart, so any whiskey that leans into rye’s spice and herbal lift already has our attention. But what makes The Compromise compelling is the equal footing between the two spirits. This isn’t a bourbon with a splash of rye or a rye softened by bourbon sweetness. It’s a true partnership.

And because it’s bottled at cask strength, we’re expecting a pour that’s full-bodied and expressive—one that doesn’t hide behind proofing water or compromise its character.

🔒 Still Unopened… and That’s Part of the Magic

Like many bottles in our collection, this one sits unopened for now. Not because we’re hesitant, but because anticipation is its own kind of pleasure. There’s something special about letting a bottle’s story breathe before the cork ever does.

We’ve heard glowing things about Nashville Barrel Company’s blending prowess, especially with rye-forward releases. That alone gives us confidence that this collaboration will shine. And while Nashtucky is new to us, that unfamiliarity adds a spark of curiosity.

🥃 How We Imagine Enjoying It

Even without tasting it yet, the structure of this whiskey hints at how it might best be enjoyed:

  • Neat, to appreciate the full interplay of sweet bourbon and spicy rye

  • On the rocks, where slow dilution might coax out herbal and caramel layers

  • Paired with a fine cigar, especially one with earthy or cocoa-forward notes to complement the rye’s spice and the bourbon’s richness

This feels like the kind of pour that rewards slow sipping—something to enjoy at the end of a long day or during a quiet moment of reflection.

✨ Final Thoughts

The Compromise is more than a blend—it’s a conversation between two styles, two distilling traditions, and two whiskey identities. It’s the kind of bottle that reminds us why we collect: not just for what we’ve tasted, but for what we’re still waiting to discover.

When we finally open it, I have a feeling it will be one of those pours that justifies the wait.
