How We Feel About the Spirit
WhistlePig FarmStock Whiskey Bottled in Barn – A Bespoke Surprise
As longtime fans of WhistlePig, we make it a point to pick up nearly every bottle they release (within reason). Their creativity and craftsmanship usually deliver something memorable, so when we spotted the FarmStock Whiskey Bottled in Barn, we didn’t hesitate to add it to our collection.
First Impressions
On the nose, this whiskey greeted us with inviting aromas—apples, cherries, brown sugar, and caramel. It promised warmth and depth, the kind of profile we’ve come to expect from WhistlePig’s farm-to-bottle ethos.
On the Palate
Unfortunately, the palate didn’t live up to the nose. The flavors felt muted, almost bland, and it was difficult to pick out any distinct notes. At 86 proof, we anticipated a smoother sip, but instead found more burn than expected. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it lacked the balance and richness we’ve enjoyed in other WhistlePig offerings.
Cocktail Companion
While this isn’t a bottle we’ll reach for when sipping neat, it has a place in our bar. Its subtle character and extra heat make it a good candidate for cocktails, where mixers can round out the edges and bring forward some of those hidden flavors.
The Discovery
A closer look at the label revealed something surprising: this wasn’t WhistlePig’s standard FarmStock Rye Bottled in Barn. Instead, it was a Total Wine Bespoke Batch. The blend is unique—50% rye, 20% barley, and 30% wheat—a departure from WhistlePig’s usual rye-forward profile. That explains the softer flavor and unexpected burn.
Final Thoughts
This bottle reminded us that not all WhistlePig releases are created equal. While it won’t rank among our favorites, it’s still an interesting experiment and a reminder to always check the fine print on the label. For fans of WhistlePig, it’s worth trying—just know it may shine more in a cocktail shaker than in a Glencairn glass.
