Barrel & Glass: A Mixology Night to Remember at The Ledges

Written by Nancy Fae for His, Hers & the Good Life

Introduction

There’s something about a clear August evening at The Ledges that feels like a promise — of good company, good cocktails, and good stories waiting to be told. The sky held steady with no rain in sight, which only added to my excitement walking in. The team had the room beautifully prepared, and Joey — our favorite bartender — greeted us with that familiar mix of charm and quiet confidence. Jeff and I arrived with open minds, ready to learn, sip, and savor whatever the night had in store.

About the Event

“Mixology Tonight Aug 13th! We’re looking forward to our Mixology Class tonight! Join us as you learn how to craft three iconic cocktails: the Last Word, Dirty Martini, and Blood & Sand. Cheers to a fun evening of cocktails, creativity, and good company!”

The Ledges knows how to set the tone. Their promo promised iconic cocktails and creativity, and the room delivered exactly that — tables dressed elegantly, tools gleaming, spirits lined up like a curated gallery of liquid inspiration.

How the Evening Unfolded

Joey kicked things off with a front-of-room demonstration for each cocktail — history, technique, and a few insider secrets sprinkled in. Then he made his rounds, helping each of us shake, strain, and garnish our own creations. Paola, our server, kept the evening flowing with warmth and efficiency, and we had the pleasure of sharing a table with Kristi and Debbie — two delightful women who made the night even more fun.

Paired with Sausage en Croûte

Joey opted for vodka instead of gin, giving the classic a cleaner backbone.

Nancy Fae: I came in knowing the Dirty Martini wasn’t my drink, but I tried to keep an open mind. The verdict? Still not my drink. Savory cocktails just aren’t my lane. I’ll always choose sweet over salty. But I did learn that serving an even number of olives is a faux pas, which was a fun tidbit.

Jeff: Too salty with the olive brine, but a dash of Tabasco helped balance it. Not my favorite. Would I order it in a bar? Absolutely not.

Paired with Artichoke Croquettes

This one came with lore: Green Chartreuse — the elusive “white whale.” Joey managed to snag a single bottle from Total Wine, and we checked online ourselves … sold out everywhere. Monks only make 1.5 million bottles a year, so scarcity is part of the charm. Alternatives include Izara Verte, Génépy, or Boomsma Cloosterbitter.

Jeff: A good drink. The lime and cherry liqueur softened the juniper bite of the gin. Bright, citrusy, balanced.

Nancy Fae: I normally don’t care for gin drinks, but this one surprised me. I added a little extra Luxardo cherry liqueur — sweet tooth, always — and it worked. I’m still not sure what flavor note the Chartreuse contributed, but the drink was genuinely enjoyable.

3. Blood and Sand

Paired with Heirloom Tomato Crostini

Joey shared that the drink’s history is murky, but it’s named after a silent film about bullfighting.

Jeff: The standout drink of the night. Cherry Heering gave it amaretto-like warmth, the orange juice added brightness, and the dash of smoky Laphroaig tied it all together.

Nancy Fae: I agreed with Jeff completely. Cherry Heering is new to us, and now I’m determined to add it to our Sipping Room collection. It was delicious.

His Take (Jeff)

A night to remember. Educational, fun, and full of surprises. The drinks started mediocre but ended on a high note. Joey’s passion for mixology made the whole experience feel elevated.

Her Take (Nancy Fae)

Another win for The Ledges, Joey, and the entire team. Paola was wonderful — friendly, attentive, and on top of everything. Meeting Kristi and Debbie was a highlight; sharing stories and laughs is part of what makes these events special. I’m already looking forward to the next mixology night.

Closing in the His, Hers & the Good Life Style

His (Jeff)

Good drinks, good people, and a few new bottles to hunt down. That’s my kind of evening.

Her (Nancy Fae)

Cocktails, conversation, and creativity — The Ledges delivered all three. My heart is full, and our Sipping Room shopping list is longer.

The Good Life

Nights like this remind us why we love what we do: exploring flavors, meeting new friends, and savoring experiences that become part of our story. Barrel & Glass wasn’t just a class. It was another chapter in the Good Life we’re building one sip at a time.
